There is a section on this website with the biographies of several coaches. For more information, please check the list of coaches available at the rink. Lessons are often 30 minutes in length and the price varies by coach. When taking a lesson, skaters are responsible for purchasing both a lesson and ice time.
Skaters should dress warmly but need to be able to move. Long pants, a jacket and gloves are a good choice. Helmets are recommended.
You'll need to have your new skates sharpened before you skate on them. After that, opinions vary but having them sharpened every 30-40 hours of skating is a common recommendation. You should make sure that you wipe down your blades after each skate session. Skates should not be stored in very hot or cold conditions so leaving them in the car is not recommended.
Skaters should have their skates on before the start of class. Arriving 10-15 minutes before the class begins will give you time to pick up rental skates and put them on. If you aren't sure what size skates you need, add a few extra minutes in case you need to make a change.
Learn to Skate students follow a curriculum created by US Figure Skating. Here is a link to a list of what is learned in each level. curriculum_basicskills.pdf (learntoskateusa.com)
Practicing is important! Each Learn to Skate participant gets a punch card at registration. Each punch = 1 public session. 2 punches = 1 free skate session.
Looking for gently used skates, dresses, etc? JVFSC maintains a FB group where items can be posted for sale or requests for items can be made. Look for JVFSC Skating Supplies.
Spirals are a classic figure skating move that highlights a skater's strength and flexibility. They are incorporated in both programs and skating skills tests.
There are several variations of lunges. A skater may use a forward lunge or they might start out moving forward and then change to moving backwards. In power class, skaters might do alternating lunges to build strength.
Stretching the hip flexors and hip rotators is helpful in being able to develop a spread eagle. Core strength is also important for this move.
